HYPATIA OF ALEXANDRIA: WOMAN AND SCIENCE IN CINEMA IN TEACHER FORMATION

The text explores how cinema constructs the image of women through systems of representation that shape subjectivity and meaning. It argues that film does not merely portray women but participates in producing cultural codes that define femininity. By examining narrative structures, visual conventions, and patterns of identification, the text shows how the female figure is often positioned as an object of the gaze, confined to roles that limit her agency. It also highlights the tensions between what is shown on screen and the possibilities of women’s experiences outside dominant discourses. The analysis proposes that understanding these mechanisms is essential for challenging established forms of representation and for imagining alternative cinematic languages. Ultimately, the text calls for a critical engagement with film that reveals how gender operates within visual culture and how different expressive strategies can open space for new forms of subjectivity.
